ForgeOptic is a small project with a simple goal: make ophthalmic training tools accessible, and bring the same care to aids that help patients at home.

ForgeOptic started during my ophthalmology residency. Like a lot of residents, I found myself practicing surgical skills however I could: capsulorhexis on grapes, microsuturing on gloves or Saran Wrap stretched over whatever happened to be nearby. It worked, but there had to be a better way than driving to the wet lab every time I wanted to practice.
I started designing and 3D-printing simple training tools that were affordable, reusable, and easy enough to keep at home or bring to work. From there, ForgeOptic grew into a broader project: finding practical ways that 3D printing can make ophthalmic training easier for residents and, where possible, make everyday eye care a little easier for patients too.
